IF YOU CANNOT BE A POET BE THE POEM

AFTER AWHILE

by Veronica Shoffstall, 1971

After awhile you learn the subtle difference
Between holding a hand and chaining a soul.
And you learn that love doesn't mean leaning,
And company doesn't mean security.
And you begin to learn that kisses aren't contracts
And presents aren't promises.
And you begin to accept your defeats
With your head up and your eyes open,
With the grace of a woman,
Not the grief of a child.
And you learn to build all your roads on today,
Because tomorrow's ground is too uncertain for plans,
And futures have a way of falling down in mid-flight.
After awhile you learn that even sunshine
Burns if you get too much.
So you plant your own garden and decorate your own soul,
Instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers.
And you learn that you really can endure,
That you really are strong,
And you really do have worth, and you learn and learn.
With every good bye you learn.

Wonderful...wonderful!
That poem and .gif says it all for me.
I am quite surprised by my realization that a woman can be quite happy without a man by her side.I was once a woman who thought I was not complete without a man. Just one of the joys of being "over sixty". Time for oneself..friends,..family, and any interests that come along.

I am enjoying looking at the lovely "Tread Softly" photo...the water is such a lovely blue; small white caps, greenery at water's edge. Where is it or is it a secret? ;-) A lake in Ontario?

Yes the poem is wonderful and full of meaty thoughts. I admire women who live on their own! I have been in a long, mostly good marriage with all the ups and downs over the years that entails. I do believe that women (and men) can foster and maintain their own identities apart from being a couple but it takes a will. (a WILL ?.... is that like with
GUSTO or VERVE?) *grin* Claire
